Jazz Sudbury is thrilled to announce its headliners for the 2011 Jazz Sudbury Festival, being held on the picturesque grounds of Science North, September 8 to 11.
The festival kicks off on Thursday, September 8 with a screening at Rainbow Cinemas of Music from the Big House, an award-winning documentary by Rita Chiarelli. Canada’s most highly acclaimed female roots and blues artist, Chiarelli has released the soundtrack from the documentary, and will be on the main stage in person to perform selections from it.
There are swingers and then there is Matt Dusk – a singer, songwriter, producer, arranger and fervent jazz-pop musicologist blessed with the perfect name. The Juno Award nominee has spent most of his career reanimating the great American songbook alongside some of his own more quirky pop creations.
She has been called one of Canada’s most valuable artistic resources. Multiple Juno Award winner, Jane Bunnett is an internationally acclaimed musician known for her creative integrity, improvisational daring and courageous artistry. Her exploration of Afro-Cuban melodies expresses the universality of music.
Ken Whiteley is a Canadian roots music legend. His award-winning musical journey has taken him from jug band, folk and swing to blues, gospel and children’s music. Whiteley’s live performances showcase his outstanding musicianship on guitars and mandolin, and his powerful vocals.
One of the most endearingly hip personalities of the Canadian jazz scene, Richard Underhill exudes a warm alto sound with distinctive in-from-the-outside soloing. A founding member of The Shuffle Demons, Underhill has been recognized for his contribution to Toronto’s musical and artistic community.
Other featured artists include: Shirantha Beddage, a nationally recognized baritone saxophonist, composer and educator; high-flying Toronto garage-jazz troupe, Elvis Bossa Nova with their celebrated, smartly investigated and, at times, rendered almost unrecognizable “All Elvis” set list; and Christine Tassan et les imposteures, who are quite unique in their genre, riding the wave of gypsy jazz that has swept Quebec.
